Chapter 1(58) (Rituals of worship)

Brahma said, ‘O brahmanas! One must silently perform tarpana to the gods and the ancestors. After this, on the shores of the great ocean, he must draw the image of a city. It should have four corners and four gates and should be extremely beautiful. But in size, it should only be the length of one hand. Inside this city, one must then draw a lotus with eight petals, along with its pericarp. O brahmanas! Having drawn the mandala, 1165 one must follow the norms and worship Narayana, the lord without birth, using the mantra with the eight aksharas. After this, I will tell you about the excellent means of purifying the body. In the heart, one must think of Omkara, within a circle. It burns, with three flames, and burns down all sins. One must next think of ‘Ra’ on the head, inside the lunar disc. It is white in complexion and showers down amrita, flooding the earth. When one has destroyed sins in this way, one obtains a divine body. After this, a learned person will perform nyasa of the god within himself using the mantra with the eight aksharas. Beginning with the left foot, one should perform nyasa in the proper order. Using that root mantra, a devotee will purify his hands and his five limbs, using Vishnu’s four forms. 1166 Each of these complexions must be separately fixed on each finger. Omkara is the earth, white in complexion, and must be fixed on the left foot. ‘Na’ is Shambhu, dark in complexion, and must be fixed on the right foot. ‘Mo’ is said to be Kala and must be fixed on the left flank. ‘Na’ is the seed of everything and must be fixed on the right flank. ‘Ra’ is said to be energy and must be fixed in the region of the navel. ‘Ya’ is associated with the wind and is fixed on the left shoulder. ‘Na’ is known as something that goes everywhere and is fixed on the right shoulder. ‘Ya’ is where all the worlds are established and it is fixed on the head. ‘Oum! I bow down to Vishnu.’ 1167 This is for the head. ‘Oum! I bow down to the blazing one.’ This is for the tuft of hair on the head. ‘Oum! I bow down to Vishnu.’ This is for the kavacha. ‘Oum! I bow down to Vishnu.’ This is for the throbbing of the limbs. ‘Oum! Hum phat.’ This is the weapon for binding down the directions. ‘Oum, white-complexioned Vasudeva!’ This is in the head. ‘Oum! Am, red-complexioned Samkarshana! Garuda is the essence of the fire, the energy and the sun.’ This is in the forehead. ‘Am, yellow-complexioned Pradyumna! You are the wind and the cloud.’ Thus. ‘Oum! Am, dark-complexioned Aniruddha! You are full of all kinds of powers.’ In this way, the devotee begins by using the four forms to arm himself with the kavacha. ‘Vishnu is stationed in front of me, Keshava is stationed behind me.
